One of our duties as interns here at WLC is to go on the Mobile Library site visits with Uttam ji, our mobile librarian. At first, I was not sure what it would be like, I imagined it simply to be Uttam ji driving up signing out books to the children and driving away, and I didn’t know how much help I could be since most books and all the paper work is to be done in Hindi.
However, Uttam ji has literally created a moving library with many of the services we have in our community libraries at Tulsi Kunj and Katesar. He has small toys for the youngest children, and different levels of books for all the older children and he also organizes activities for them. He sat down to read to a few of them, and I helped those who were reading English. I even sat down to listen to those who were reading aloud in Hindi ( hoping it would help with my language development). Uttam ji then went on to check the homework he had assigned in his last visit. After he sat the children down and began a quiz and all the children participated eagerly.
Just when I thought we were all done, a game of Kabbadi was organized and the mothers, fathers, sisters and other children gathered around to watch! There was even a dance competition in the end where the children got to show off their talents.
Uttam ji took this van simply filled with books and a few toys and managed to spend an afternoon filled with learning, fun and activities with the children who before would have spent their afternoon aimlessly or helping with house chores. It is heartwarming to see the effects he has on the children and how happy their families get watching their children participate.
